Why does the V60 T5 FWD get a 8spd Auto, but the T5 AWD and T6R get 6spds?

Fuel economy BS probably.

4 cyl is the eco (in America) base model, 8spd helps a lot with that :]

It's possible that the 8 speed auto can't handle that much torque, or that its packaging is not compact enough to fit in the engine bay along with the AWD transaxle.

I'm guessing it's the latter.

Might be to do with global sales numbers and what is built for other countries. I just had a quick look at what's on Autotrader in the UK, and almost all the V60s are diesel, two-thirds are manual. There's only one T5 and no T6s at all. There's barely a handful of AWD versions, and all are diesel.

Oh, and one diesel plug-in hybrid I didn't even know they made:

Man, a 4 cyl T5 confuses the heck outta me. Shouldn't they have called it a T4?

lol right? I work for Volvo and I heard they were going to call the 4cyl turbo/supercharged engine the T6. Yup 4cyl T6...wtf? lol

As an 850 owner...yeah, wtf. T5 = 5cyl.

But still, a 8spd would help the T6 putter along much better as well.

Same here.

It's pretty clear BMW, Audi, and Porsche have all been able to do it. But those same above carmakers are also able to have AWD...

Who knows. The packaging is also much different for a transverse layout. BMW, Porsche and (most) Audis use a longitudinal arrangement. Apples to Oranges.

that's true. Also, i've seen first gen S40's in Mexico with T4 badges, so it is possible

I'm not sure, I know there's a D3 in Europe, not sure if that's a real 3-cyl though.

Did the US/Canada ever get a T4?

First gen S40's had 4 cyl turbo but they didn't have a T4 badge, they had a 1.9 badge

I could be wrong, but I thought it was because the new T5 (4-cyl and 8spd auto) could not handle AWD either due to not being robust enough or because development isn't done yet.

So, we get the new T5 and eventually the new T6 (which is also a 4-cyl. wtf?) but the old and actual T5 and T6 carry on in AWD guise for a while. I think they'll be replaced for 2015.

The 6spd auto in my dad's xc90 has nothing wrong with it, and it's very tolerable. V60RDesign will have paddles...not all that bad, but a 8spd would be nice.

I'm not sure. Are there AWD D3's/etc. in Europe?
